Every Triton owner knows the feeling. You pull the tailgate handle, it drops hard, and you are left wincing at the bang. Do it a few hundred times and wear on the hinges, the paintwork, and your patience adds up fast. It is one of those things the factory simply did not solve, and it is entirely fixable with the right upgrade.
The HSP Tailgate Assist is purpose built Triton tailgate struts that dampen the drop on the way down and take the weight out on the way up. It is one of the quickest, most satisfying upgrades you can make to a Triton, and it suits every generation from the MQ through to the current MV.
Why the Triton Tailgate is Worth Fixing
The Mitsubishi Triton is a well-built ute, however, without any dampening, the tailgate drops under its own weight with nothing to slow it down. Over time this creates stress on the hinge points, accelerates wear on the tailgate seal, and risks damaging whatever is sitting near the opening when it falls. For owners who use the tub daily — tradies, campers, farmers — the cumulative effect is real.
A quality tailgate strut system does two things: it controls the descent so the gate lowers smoothly rather than slamming, and it reduces the effort required to lift it back up. On a ute that gets opened and closed multiple times a day, both matter.
HSP Tailgate Assist for the Mitsubishi Triton
Single or Twin Strut: Which One Do You Need?
The HSP Tailgate Assist for the Triton is available in single and twin strut configurations, and the right choice depends on whether your Triton has a factory torsion bar fitted.
Twin struts suit vehicles without a torsion bar and provide both soft drop dampening and weight-reduced easy lift action. Single struts are designed for vehicles with a torsion bar, offering only soft drop dampening to complement the already reduced weight of the tailgate. If you are unsure which applies to your Triton, confirm with your nearest HSP stockist before ordering.
Which Triton Models Are Covered?
HSP’s Triton tailgate assist range covers the full Triton lineup across multiple generations. The MR & MQ series from 2015 to 2024 is catered for, and the current MV from 2024 onwards has a dedicated kit engineered to its updated tailgate configuration. Suits GLX, GLX+, GLS, and GSR variants across dual cab builds.
Installation
The HSP Triton Tailgate Assist range can be installed in just 5 to 45 minutes depending on your Triton. As the installation utilises factory points, almost every model requires no drilling and in many applications the original hardware and bolts of the Triton are repurposed, providing a seamless, factory-integrated look. It can be fitted at home or through any of HSP’s 500+ fitting centres.
Built to Last
HSP Tailgate Assist has been tested to withstand 20,000 to 100,000 cycles, ensuring long-term reliability. The strut system is also tested to handle temperatures ranging from -30°C to 80°C, covering the full range of Australian conditions from alpine winters to outback summers. Backed by a 2-year warranty on brackets and a 1-year warranty on struts.
Pair It With the Tail Lock
If you are upgrading the tailgate, it is worth addressing the other gap at the same time. The Triton’s tailgate does not come standard with central locking, which means without an aftermarket fix it is secured by a latch alone.

The HSP Tail Lock for the Mitsubishi Triton syncs the tailgate directly with the factory remote, so when the vehicle locks, the tailgate locks with it. No drilling required, installation takes under an hour, and the mechanism sits completely hidden inside the tailgate. Together, the Tailgate Assist and Tail Lock give the Triton a complete, upgraded tailgate solution. Backed by a 2-year warranty. From $249.
